Materials Needed for Angiosperm Dissection

Step 1:  Examine your flower, leaves, and any other characteristics of plant.  Record your findings.

Step 2: Begin the dissection on one of the two flowers.  Gently pull apart the petals.  Identify, remove, and examine the reproductive parts of the flower.

Leaves and some petals removed.  Notice the parallel veins?

Flower Reproductive Parts

Petals, stamens, and pistil removed.
Step 3:  Slice the pistil in half to examine the ovary. Do you seen any eggs or seed-like structures?

Step 4:  Identify if your plant is:  monoecious or dioecious, incomplete or complete flower, and monocot or dicot.

Step 5:  Attach all of the flower parts onto the foam board with pins. Identify all of the parts and the type of angiosperm that you have identified.

Complete Dissection.  Is it a monocot or dicot?

Step 6:  Repeat steps 1 through 5 with your second flower.  Identify the differences and similarities between the two flowers.
